Reviews for Khors's Cold

No drastic changes — 80%

The follow-up to “The Flame of Eternity’s Decline” doesn’t bring about any big changes music wise. The name of the game is still atmospheric Slavonic black metal in the vein of Nokturnal Mortum’s “Weltanschauung” and Astrofaes. However, this time there’s also a clear Drudkh feel in the music, which is nice.

The riffs are again at times of the heard-it-somewhere-else-already kind (e.g. “Conscious Burning”) but just like on the debut, the music has good overall fluency to it and the song writing is solid. I feel that these two factors compensate rather well for the lack of originality. The chorus on “Garnet” reminds me a lot of the chorus on Thunderbolt’s “Call of the Ancient Times”. “Misery” is the most depressive track and this track, especially when the clean guitars come in, reminds me somewhat of Shining. The Drudkh influence I mentioned earlier comes through most clearly on “In the Depths of the Black Hills”. This particular song could’ve been lifted from a straight from a Drudkh album. “The Abyss” ends the album in a calm and dark manner. On this song there are no distorted guitars at all. “Whispers” is the “obligatory” ambient instrumental. As far as production goes, I don’t have much to complain about: it’s clean and professional just like on the first album. The snare sound is (again) not to my taste but this no big problem.

So there you have it. No big surprises, no drastic change of style from the first album and no wild experimentation. “Cold” is without a doubt a nice atmospheric Slavonic black metal album. It does what it’s supposed to do and it’s certainly above average. I advise fans of Nokturnal Mortum, Astrofaes and Drudkh to check this band out. However, I also think that the band should try to find its own identity in the future, instead of sounding like a mixture of the three aforementioned bands. There are already enough bands playing this style and only so much can be done with it before overkill occurs. So guys, let’s hear something more “Khors” next time!
