Khors — Mysticism

Even in the world of metal, where typically a band typically has to have some sort of reference point to be “true” metal, there’s always band that come out doing something just different enough to defy metal conventions. I swear Khors comes close to easy listening death metal — quite a few acoustic guitars, relaxed pace, light keyboards, and of course harsh vocals. Ok, so it’s not like that all the time, as there are simple riffs that march along to double-bass beats, and black metal like keyboards that support the action with choirs and held down chords, though those keyboards do go off into their own territory almost like Children of Bodom, even with a solo or two.
It’s a strange experience, because “Mysticism” is like an album for death metal fans to mellow out to. Sure, some of the biting guitar tones are there, as well as the barking and roll-along drumming, but it really feels like the guys in Khors are taking their sweet time jamming on some sombre melodies without actually becoming a doom metal band.
