Khors — Mysticism (2008)
Four years into their career Ukrainian black metalers Khors released their third album and paragon records debut titled ‘Mysticism.’ According to their website this album was four and a half years in the making so someone must have been working on this album before the band even started. They have a rather unique take to black metal. Rather than being very aggressive or seeing whose drummer is the fastest they play a lot of slower more relaxing parts with a lot of keyboards and even some acoustic guitars. The keyboards give the music a very mystical feel making mysticism a perfect and fitting title for this album. At times the atmosphere can be reminiscent of thy serpent on their ‘Forests Of Witchery,’ album. Songs such as “Milk Of Heavens,” and the instrumental piece “Pagan Scars,” have a very relaxing feel to them. If you think black metal has to be ugly and hateful listen to either of these pieces and be proven otherwise. Songs such as “Mysticism,” and “Winterfall,” have a heavier feel to them but they still keep a slower to mid tempo and the mystical atmosphere. The lyrics are all done in English and deal largely with winter and nature like a lot of pagan black metal bands do. There is also a nearly ten minute bonus video of a live performance of the first two tracks of this album “Through The Rays Of Fading Moon,” and “Raven’s Dance.” This clip can be viewed on a computer which if you are reading this that should not pose much of a problem. The live video was recorded at SV club in Khmenlnitskij. The live performance clips has very good sound quality you can hear everything and the songs have a more aggressive feel live than on the CD. It is filmed using one stationary camera that gives you a view of the stage, you cant see the keyboardist though, and some of the audience. The final track “Red Mirrors,” is a very slow relaxing piece with acoustic parts, clean vocals, keyboards and slow drums mixed with a heavier part and even a guitar solo. All in all this is a real good album which is usually the case when it comes to paragon records and black metal. This album is worth checking out if you are into bands like thy serpent.
