KHORS
Mysticism
Paragon Records
When Khorus departed from his former band Astrofaes, he decided he wanted to create a new one. In 2004, Khors was formed by him to play atmospheric black metal. Khorus had taken the name Khors from the Slavic god of sun and light. He then started recruiting members to make the new band complete. With Khorus handling bass duties, he brought in his ex-Astrofaes bandmate Khaoth on drums and Helg from Runes of Dianceht on guitars and vocals. Later on, Nort from Nagual was brought in as second guitarist and the band was complete. This is the bands third full length release that took four years to put together and their first on Paragon Records. "Mysticism" is an extremely well put together album from these Ukrainian black metallers and is one of the best atmospheric black metal albums I have heard in the past year or so. Khors has two different vocal styles in their music, one is from their frontman Helg who has a growling vocal delivery and the other is sung clearly by Michail "Maiden" Smirnoff from the band Mental Home. The music is a good mix of aggression and melody, most of which is in the guitar playing of Helg and Nort. You won't hear much tremolo picking on the album, instead their guitar riffs are mainly melodic with some acoustic guitar passages that fit right in. There's also quite a bit of synth playing on the album by session keyboardist Saturious who seems to know very well how to add atmosphere without over doing it and making it sound like a bad goth metal band. While some of the members of Khors have ties to bands that are considered National Socialist, the band states that it has no political ties. Either way, this is some seriously good metal being played on "Mysticism" and definitely worth buying.
