For black metal, Ukraine is a diamond in the rough with bands such as Drudkh, Hate Forest and, of course, Khors. Ukraine is no stranger to begging, stealing and borrowing band members from one another, so it is no surprise that Khors’ drummer is an ex-Hate Forest member and for those that are experiencing Khors for the first time via this album, you may find that they share the same gritty sound as the aforementioned bands. So what makes Khors unique from their neighbours? The answer to that is their fifth full-length album ‘Wisdom Of Centuries’.

A brief interlude, ‘Black Forest’s Flaming Eyes’ blasts in, trading between furious tremolo picking and melodic, mid-tempo riffs. The brutality with which Helg pendulums between black and death metal vocals is almost an art form, ever changing to fit the mood. Closing track ‘Only Time Will Take It Away’ is classic black metal, but Khors have expanded upon this with sparing use of keyboards and monstrous riffs.

Bleak as ever, Khors are a figurehead of Ukranian metal, daring to experiment with their sound but, all the while, never relinquishing their dark and evil trademark.

You’ll like this if… the sound of a Drudkh/Wodensthrone hybrid has you frothing at the mouth.
